The share of UK citizens who believe they are citizens of the nations of the United Kingdom, as opposed to citizens of the world, has risen appreciably.
According to pollster YouGov, in September 2022, 59% of respondents thought they were citizens of the nations of the UK, while 27% felt they were citizens of the world. The latest figures from this month show that the split has changed to 66% versus 21%.
The shift comes amid heightened frustration with immigration into the UK and at the tail end of a long period of flat economic and income growth.
It is also occurring alongside a rise in support for Nigel Farage and his Reform Party, which proposes curbs on immigration and a return to policies that would grow the UK economy and celebrate its history and culture.
