At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in September, Polish Secretary of State Marcin Bosacki accused Russia of deliberately violating Poland’s sovereignty by sending military drones into its territory. He said the incident marked the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that Polish airspace had been intentionally breached on such a scale.

According to Bosacki, 19 Russian drones flew across Ukrainian and Belarusian skies before crossing into Poland on the night of 9–10 September. The drones were intercepted and destroyed by Polish and allied forces from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Bosacki displayed evidence, including Russian markings on drone parts, and dismissed Moscow’s claims that the breach might have been a malfunction or coincidence. “Once or twice, it can be a coincidence or a malfunction, but not 19 times, not 19 intrusions conducted within seven hours,” he said.

The Polish envoy contrasted Moscow’s denials with Russia’s past rhetoric, recalling how Soviet leaders justified invasions of Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia in 1968, and Poland in 1939 under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. He argued that Russia was once again trying to “set the region on fire” while serving as “a judge in its own case” as a permanent Security Council member.

Bosacki urged the Council to issue a unified condemnation of what he called “Russian criminal actions,” framing it as a preventive step to de-escalate tensions and deter further attacks. He demanded Russia take full responsibility, explain its actions, and guarantee such intrusions would not recur.

Concluding his speech, Bosacki insisted Poland would not be intimidated. He reiterated Warsaw’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and said the path to peace remained clear: “Russia must stop its barbaric war against Ukraine.”
