Tyla Laura Seethal, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Edenvale, Johannesburg, has become one of the most exciting new voices in global pop music, carrying the South African flag onto the world stage. After making her debut with “Getting Late” in 2019, Tyla quickly built a devoted following with her seamless blend of amapiano, pop and R&B, a fusion that has seen her dubbed the “Queen of Popiano.”
Her star rose rapidly in 2023 when her single “Water” broke into the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first South African solo artist to do so in 55 years. The hit track went on to win the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024, securing Tyla’s place among the elite of contemporary music. The release of her self-titled debut album in March 2024 saw further international acclaim, charting in the US, UK and beyond, while a deluxe edition released later that year produced another standout single, “Push 2 Start.”
Tyla’s visibility has only grown, with appearances at the BET Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. In 2025 she headlined Coachella, hosted the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and dropped the EP “WWP,” featuring the singles “Bliss” and “Is It.” Now preparing for her We Wanna Party Tour, Tyla’s trophy shelf includes more than 30 awards, confirming her position as South Africa’s most influential pop export.
