Two decades after Homer Simpson first tried to save Springfield on the big screen, The Simpsons Movie is finally getting a sequel.

20th Century Studios and Disney confirmed on Monday that the new film will be released on 23 July 2027, though details of the plot remain under wraps. A teaser poster shows a doughnut being grabbed, accompanied by the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

The original film, released in 2007, told the story of Homer polluting Springfield’s water supply, triggering the government to seal off the city with a giant glass dome. The movie went on to gross an estimated $536 million worldwide, fuelling years of speculation about a follow-up.

Excited fans reacted to the announcement with memes riffing on the show’s famous opening credits. One blackboard gag showed Bart writing: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”

The Simpsons first appeared in 1987 as shorts on US television before becoming a full series in 1989. Created by Matt Groening, the sitcom is now in its 37th season and has already been renewed through to season 40, set to air in 2028 and 2029. Showrunner Matt Selman recently credited streaming platforms with keeping the franchise alive for new generations of fans, saying viewers can now “watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever.”
