Walmart is set to make its most ambitious move yet into the South African retail market, confirming that its first Walmart-branded stores will open before the end of the year. The announcement comes after years of operating through its local subsidiary, Massmart, and marks a direct entry for the US retail giant, which is pledging to shake up competition with its hallmark “Every Day Low Prices” and a focus on local sourcing.

Kath McLay, President and CEO of Walmart International, said the company’s new stores will offer groceries, household goods, apparel, and technology alongside a broad range of locally produced items. “Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, and technology. Walmart also will offer a variety of locally sourced products. By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” said McLay.

The company revealed that small and medium local businesses, onboarded at an April Growth Summit, will feature prominently on store shelves.

Massmart chief executive, Miles Van Rensburg, said, “We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities. By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans.”

With stores already under development, Walmart’s entry is set to intensify competition in the retail sector and broaden opportunities for South African suppliers, employees, and communities.
