Recent research is giving grandparents a heartening reason to join their grandkids in play. Studies show that time spent laughing, walking, or playing together brings real health rewards for older adults. Simple activities like pushing a swing, kicking a ball, or strolling to the park help grandparents stay active, strengthen muscles, and lift moods, while also creating memories that connect generations.

A University of Glasgow study found that grandparents who include play with grandchildren in their daily routines often enjoy better fitness and set a healthy example for the whole family. And the benefits go beyond exercise.

Playing board games or learning new games with grandchildren can sharpen memory and problem-solving skills. When children teach the rules, they feel proud and capable, while grandparents get the mental workout that helps keep their minds strong.

These findings reflect the advice of Dr Sanjay Gupta in his book, Keep Sharp, which highlights movement, curiosity, and close familial relationships as important aspects that contribute to healthy aging.

There are emotional rewards too. Dr Michael Yogman of the American Academy of Pediatrics calls grandparents: “wonderful playmates” who bring comfort and confidence to children while gaining companionship themselves. Sharing these moments fills both generations with a sense of joy and belonging.

Playtime, it turns out, is more than fun. For grandparents, it is a gentle, everyday way to stay healthy in body and spirit while staying close to the people who make life brightest.
