Pakistan has reportedly offered the United States (US) the chance to build and operate a new port at Pasni in the country’s Balochistan province, aiming to attract US investment and rebalance ties away from China.
According to the Financial Times, advisors to army chief General Asim Munir approached the Trump administration with the proposal, which includes a rail link to export critical minerals. Though not officially confirmed, Islamabad has not denied the talks.
Pasni lies about 100 miles from Iran and 70 miles from Gwadar, where China has struggled to advance a port they have been building, suggesting a calculated bid to diversify partnerships. The move could also give Washington a stake in the resource-rich but unstable Balochistan region, potentially encouraging greater US counterterrorism co-operation.
Analysts view the offer as symbolic but unlikely to materialise soon, citing security and geopolitical risks. However, it does show that Islamabad is looking to build alliances in what remains an unstable region of the world.
