A senior United Arab Emirates official has warned that Israel’s latest plan to annex large portions of the occupied West Bank could jeopardise the Abraham Accords and the future of Arab–Israeli normalisation.

Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, stated that such a move would cross a “red line,” erasing prospects for regional integration and the two-state solution. Her comments come after Israeli Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, announced a project aiming to absorb as much as 80% of West Bank territory, a step widely criticised as a fatal blow to Palestinian statehood ambitions.

Nusseibeh’s remarks mark the toughest stance Abu Dhabi has taken since the 2023 Gaza war, reflecting rising Gulf frustration with Israel’s increasingly hard-line government. She directly called on Israel to halt its latest settlement expansion plans, stressing that the path to lasting peace and economic cooperation lies in respecting existing agreements and preserving the possibility of a negotiated settlement. The UAE’s intervention signals growing disquiet among Arab states that signed normalisation agreements with Israel under US mediation.

Analysts suggest that if Israel pushes ahead with annexation, it could unravel years of painstaking diplomacy, undermining not only the Abraham Accords but also broader US efforts to expand Arab–Israeli partnerships—including a potential deal with Saudi Arabia. With tensions mounting, the future of economic and security ties in the region now hangs in the balance, raising the stakes for all parties involved.
