The iconic Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, South Africa’s last remaining passenger steam train, is set to return to the tracks after almost two decades. Alan McVitty, CEO of Classic Rail and Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, confirmed that the company has secured funding partners and finalised contracts to rebuild the historic 67-kilometre line between George and Knysna.

The revival will roll out in two phases, first from Knysna to Sedgefield, then from Sedgefield to George, with the initial phase expected to take 12 months. Locomotives are being restored in Gauteng, while carriages will be refurbished in George.

The project is expected to boost tourism and create local jobs along the Garden Route. “Everything is on track and we are finally on our way,” McVitty said, calling it a collaborative victory for local businesses and South African heritage.
