As winter gives way to spring on the Garden Route, Mossel Bay transforms into a haven for whale watchers. From July to October each year, Southern Right whales journey thousands of kilometres from Antarctica to calve and mate along South Africa’s southern coast, turning the local waters into a stage for some of nature’s most dramatic spectacles.
Eco Whale Safaris, run by Mossel Bay Boat Adventures, offers residents and visitors front-row seats to this migration. Their 45- to 90-minute cruises head directly to prime whale watching spots stretching from Mossel Bay to Great Brak. Passengers can witness awe-inspiring breaches, powerful tail slaps, and sometimes spot other giants like Bryde’s, humpback, or even orca whales.
But the oceanic show is not just about whales. Each excursion also includes a visit to Seal Island, home to thousands of Cape Fur seals. The island and its surrounding waters are also popular hunting grounds for great white sharks, and lucky guests may spot them on their journey. Bottlenose dolphins and a variety of seabirds often make appearances, adding to the excitement.
For locals and tourists alike, the return of the whale migration to Mossel Bay brings with it an unmatched opportunity to witness South Africa’s coastal wildlife at its most spectacular. The season promises unforgettable encounters for all who venture onto the water.
