A new trade deal between South Africa and China opens the Chinese market to local stone fruit, boosting exports and jobs.

A new trade protocol between South Africa and China marks a breakthrough for local farmers. Signed in Shanghai between Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and his Chinese counterpart, Sun Meijun, the deal opens the Chinese market to South African apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes, a first for both nations.

The agreement is expected to unlock R400 million in export value over the next five years, creating up to 600 new jobs across farms, packhouses, and logistics. Steenhuisen said the move would make South Africa’s agriculture less dependent on traditional buyers and more competitive globally.
