France’s prime minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned on Monday, just hours after unveiling his new cabinet, plunging President Emmanuel Macron’s administration into fresh turmoil. The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron had accepted Lecornu’s resignation, ending a tenure of less than a month.

Lecornu took office in September after François Bayrou’s government collapsed in a confidence vote. His short-lived administration faced immediate resistance in parliament and criticism within Macron’s centrist alliance over the cabinet’s lack of renewal.

The presidency said simply that Lecornu had: “submitted the resignation of his government, which the President accepted.” Macron is expected to name a successor within days, his seventh prime minister since 2022, as he struggles to steady a government without a parliamentary majority.
