The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has confirmed it will meet with the African National Congress (ANC) this evening to discuss the reinstatement of its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, as Johannesburg’s Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Roads and Transport.
Kunene was briefly placed on leave by the PA after he was found at the home of a murder accused businessman during a police raid. Kunene was subsequently cleared in an investigation conducted by Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Inc at the request of the PA.
Kunene was again sworn in as a Johannesburg councillor on Friday. The ANC, with which the PA governs in coalition in Johannesburg, has seemingly been reluctant to reappoint Kunene to his previous post.
The Common Sense reported over the weekend that the PA was willing to exit South Africa’s unitary government, and its leader Gayton McKenzie resign from the Cabinet if Kunene was not reappointed. The PA said a delegation from its leadership will engage directly with the ANC to finalise the matter.
“The outcome of the meeting will be made public as soon as an agreement has been reached between the two parties,” the PA noted in its statement.
