The DA has again called on the government’s Security Cluster to deliver an urgent, co-ordinated action plan to restore the rule of law and halt what it describes as South Africa’s descent into a mafia state.

In a statement issued over the weekend, Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Glynnis Breytenbach said the Ministers of Justice, Correctional Services, Police, and State Security must present a joint strategy by 31 October. The party argues that deep corruption and mismanagement within the police have paralysed criminal investigations, leading to a justice system that fails victims and fuels impunity.

Breytenbach said South Africa’s entire criminal justice chain, from police investigation to prosecution and incarceration: “has collapsed under the weight of political interference and systemic failure.” She added that without urgent co-ordination: “crime syndicates will continue to operate above the law, crippling communities and driving investment away.”

The DA’s renewed call follows a series of high-profile corruption cases and growing concern about organised criminal networks infiltrating state institutions. The party said the lack of accountability has left ordinary South Africans exposed to escalating violent crime, while the economy suffers from weakened investor confidence.

Breytenbach warned that: “economic recovery is impossible in a climate where lawlessness reigns,” adding that the DA will intensify parliamentary pressure until a credible plan is tabled and implemented.
