On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa told Parliament that South Africa’s G20 Presidency, themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” has won “strong support” from member states, invited countries and global institutions as it enters its final 90 days.

Ramaphosa said that 87 of 132 official meetings have already been held, tackling disaster resilience, debt sustainability for low-income nations, financing a just energy transition and harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and sustainable development. Negotiations on ministerial declarations are underway, with most remaining meetings scheduled for September and October.

He added that Pretoria is pressing for reform of the multilateral trading system and the international financial architecture, including stronger development banks. “While there is divergence on some issues, there is strong support for South Africa’s priorities among G20 members,” he told MPs.

A key milestone, the Third Meeting of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in July, produced a unanimous communiqué covering Africa, global economic stability, sustainable finance and tax policy. On 29 August, the Presidency launched the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Wealth Inequality, chaired by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, to sharpen focus on widening income and wealth gaps.

Outcomes from the remaining meetings will feed into an ambitious Leaders’ Declaration that South Africa hopes to secure at the Johannesburg summit in November, advancing the development agenda of the Global South and the African continent.
