South Africa will take part in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), scheduled from 23 to 29 September in New York under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.” President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the national delegation.
Cabinet said the platform will be used to reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to multilateralism, universal human rights, and sustainable development. The country will also advocate for peaceful conflict resolution, with a particular focus on the crises in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Sudans, and Palestine.
In addition, South Africa intends to advance its G20 Presidency agenda during the session. President Ramaphosa is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several heads of state and government, as well as engage with chief executives of major international companies.
Ministers Parks Tau and Ronald Lamola have already travelled ahead of the delegation for talks on the South Africa–United States trade relationship and to participate in UN special sessions. Other ministers will report on their respective engagements during the course of the Assembly.
