The South African Communist Party (SACP) has issued a strong condemnation following Israel’s alleged assassination of Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi, prime minister of Yemen. In a statement the SACP called the killing, which took place at the end of August, a blatant violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and international law, accusing Israel and the United States of “imperialist aggression” and turning Yemen into a battleground for dominance.

The SACP linked the assassination to a broader US-Israeli campaign targeting groups that support what it called Palestinian rights. The statement highlighted what it described as the “remarkable courage and solidarity” of Yemenis in resisting attacks on Gaza, and condemned the destruction of public infrastructure, which has led to widespread suffering. The party argued that such actions undermine peace efforts and further destabilise the Middle East.

Calling for decisive international intervention, the SACP urged the global community to restore peace, halt hostilities against Yemen, end Israeli military operations in Gaza, and lift sanctions on Iran. The party also called on South Africans to strengthen campaigns of solidarity with Yemen and other pro-Iranian actors in the region, framing their struggle as part of a wider fight against imperialism and external domination.
