Almost nine out of ten ANC supporters say the fundamental problem with South Africa today is government failure and that better service delivery needs to be a priority.

Earlier this year, the Social Research Foundation (SRF) polled voter opinion on governance. It put the following statement to voters:

"The fundamental problem with South Africa today is government failure. It did inherit a lot of problems from apartheid, but it has now had 30 years and has failed to live up to its duties and promises. Better service delivery needs to be the priority."

Among ANC voters, 71% said they strongly agreed with the statement, and 19% said they somewhat agreed. In total, therefore, 90% of ANC voters felt that government failure is the fundamental problem in South Africa and that improved service delivery should be the main priority.

Eight percent of ANC voters disagreed strongly with the statement, and 3% disagreed somewhat. In total, therefore, 11% of ANC voters felt that government failure is not the fundamental problem in South Africa and that improved service delivery should not be the main priority.
