A recent survey by pollster, IPSOS, of over 17 000 adults around the world found that South Africans strongly support protections for LGB people against discrimination. The survey, conducted in 23 countries, found that 72% of respondents supported protections for LGB people. In South Africa the figure was 77%.

In a note accompanying its data ISPOS wrote that, “Majorities in all countries support legal measures to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination. Support for same-sex couples marrying and adopting children remains strong, although is not as high as it was.”

Official and public support for LGB rights in South Africa is remarkably strong relative to many other African societies and a feature of its civil rights culture.

Through the lens of rights culture, South Africa’s high level of support reflects not only progressive legislation but also the wider acceptance of diversity as a national value. As debates about equality continue worldwide, South Africa stands out for its strong civil commitment to protecting LGB rights.
