A poll by South Africa’s Social Research Foundation asked South Africans whether they prefer to listen to, watch, or read the news.

Watching the news came in first place with just over 40% of people saying this was their preferred means to take in newsworthy events around them. Listening came second with just over 36% saying this was how they preferred to absorb news. Reading came in third at 22%.

The survey found that women were significantly more likely to listen to the news than men, whereas men were much more likely to watch news than women.

University graduates were more likely to read the news than to watch it or listen to it.

Amongst South Africa’s poorest earners 74% listened to the news whilst 13% and 10% respectively watched or read it. Amongst South Africa’s highest earners those figures were virtually inverted with 54% reading, 24% watching, and 23% listening.
