Most South Africans say they would accept their child being in a same-sex relationship, according to a June 2025 survey conducted by the Social Research Foundation (SRF) among 1 004 respondents nationwide.

Participants were asked: “Imagine one of your children revealed to your family that they were gay and wished to bring their same-sex partner to the next family dinner. What would your reaction to this be?” They could choose between being somewhat or fully accepting, or somewhat or fully unaccepting.

Overall, 60% of respondents said they would be somewhat or fully accepting, while 39% said they would be somewhat or fully unaccepting.

By race, 60% of black South Africans said they would be accepting and 40% unaccepting. Among coloured South Africans, 49% said they would be accepting and 50% unaccepting. Among white South Africans, 74% said they would be accepting and 23% unaccepting.
