South Africans don’t pay for news

Only 2 in 10 South Africans pay to access news. This is according to a poll conducted by the Social Research Foundation (SRF).

The poll found that just over 4% of South African news consumers pay for newspaper subscriptions, just under 10% pay for online news subscriptions only, and 4.5% pay for both.

The balance of news consumers do not pay for the news media they read, watch, or listen to. The data revealed the financial challenge faced by media companies in producing high-quality news and related information.
