Springbok Women flanker and Isuzu Bulls Daisies captain Lusanda Dumke has stepped away from rugby due to health concerns, bringing an abrupt pause to a decorated career at both provincial and national level.
The 28-year-old loose forward, who has earned 33 Test caps and captained the national side on three occasions, recently led the Bulls Daisies to a third consecutive Women’s Premier Division title in 2025. Dumke, a former SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year, has been widely praised for her leadership, resilience, and influence in shaping the culture of the teams she represented.
Springbok Women performance coach Swys de Bruin acknowledged her impact on the game, saying, “Lusanda has been pivotal for us, but we now wish her the best as she battles her medical condition. Her absence will have an impact, but at the same time, the players going to the Rugby World Cup will know that playing for your country while you are fit and strong is indeed a privilege.”
Blue Bulls Company executive for women’s rugby, Thando Manana, described Dumke as “more than just a captain,” calling her “the heartbeat of the Isuzu Bulls Daisies” and lauding her humility and relentless drive. “While we respect her decision to step away for health reasons, her legacy will continue to inspire every player who wears this jersey,” he added.
Dumke has requested privacy regarding her medical condition and will not be making further public comment. Her departure, through a lens of respect for player welfare, will shape ongoing discussions about health and resilience in women’s sport. Her story will inspire future generations.
