Rising South African fast bowler Kwena Maphaka is set to undergo precautionary scans after feeling hamstring discomfort during the Lions’ four-day match against Western Province at Newlands.
The 19-year-old left the field after bowling just under six overs in the first innings but later returned to claim 3 for 26 in the second innings as the Lions cruised to victory by an innings and 134 runs. Initial assessments suggest no serious injury, though an MRI will be conducted as a safeguard.
Maphaka’s fitness is being closely monitored as South Africa prepares for a busy few months that include a one-off T20I against Namibia in Windhoek this weekend, and tours of Pakistan and India. Team management is also weighing whether the young left-armer should gain more red-ball experience domestically before being exposed to further international demands.
Already capped in two Tests, three ODIs, and 13 T20Is, Maphaka has been signed by Durban’s Super Giants for the upcoming SA20 season. Saturday’s T20I against Namibia will be led by Donovan Ferreira, with Quinton de Kock making his return to international cricket.
