South Africa made a powerful statement in the opening ODI at Headingley yesterday, routing England by seven wickets to seize an early lead in the three-match series. Opting to bowl first, Temba Bavuma’s men tore through the home side’s batting, dismissing England for a paltry 131 in under 25 overs. Spinner Keshav Maharaj starred with 4 for 22, while Wiaan Mulder’s brisk 3 for 33 and an electric fielding display left England reeling. Only debutant Jamie Smith stood firm, top-scoring with an assured 54, having given the Englishmen a fast start. However, Smith was the only English batter to hold back the South African onslaught.
Chasing this modest total, Aiden Markram put the result beyond doubt with a whirlwind 86 from just 55 deliveries, racing to his half-century in 23 balls. Markram hammered debutant seamer Sonny Baker for 45 runs in his first four overs as South Africa cruised home with more than 29 overs to spare, although the tourists lost three quick wickets just before the result was wrapped up. The visitors’ clinical showing was in stark contrast to an England side who appeared rusty after their recent Hundred commitments.
The teams now head to Lord’s for the second ODI tomorrow, with England under early pressure to respond after a chastening start to the series. South Africa will go into the match with confidence, having also recently won an ODI series against Australia.
South Africa will feel they have struck an early blow in the series. England, meanwhile, are under immediate pressure to regroup and find answers before the next match.
