The Springboks may have thrashed Argentina 67-30 in Durban, but Canan Moodie insists South Africa’s focus must remain sharp as the Rugby Championship goes to the wire.
Speaking after Saturday’s emphatic win, the utility back stressed that nothing has been secured yet. “The Rugby Championship has not been won yet,” Moodie said. “We know there’s still a job to do next week…so we’ll just keep our heads down and continue doing the hard work to hopefully get the result next weekend. Then we’ll have something to celebrate.”
South Africa sit top of the standings on 15 points, ahead of New Zealand on 14 and Australia on 11, while Argentina remain on nine and out of the running. By the time the Boks face the Pumas at Twickenham next Saturday, they will know what is required after the All Blacks and Wallabies meet earlier in the day in the final Bledisloe Cup clash.
Moodie cautioned against complacency, pointing to Argentina’s ability to beat the All Blacks, Wallabies, and British and Irish Lions this season. “They’ll come hard at us because they are a very passionate rugby nation,” he said. “For us, the focus is on trying to do the job on Saturday.”
The 21-year-old praised the team’s structures and consistency, noting that Saturday’s nine-try showing built on their 43-10 dismantling of New Zealand two weeks ago. He also highlighted Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s record-breaking 37-point haul, including a hat-trick, calling it “amazing to see” and a sign of growing confidence in the squad.
The Boks arrived in London yesterday and resumed training today, with the Championship on the line at Twickenham.
