South Africa’s preparations for the final two One-Day Internationals against England have taken a knock with the withdrawal of opener Tony de Zorzi, who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury. De Zorzi suffered the strain to his left hamstring while fielding during the opening game of the series at Headingley, a match the Proteas won comfortably by seven wickets.
Cricket South Africa has confirmed that the 27-year-old will return home immediately for scans, and that the touring squad will not call up a replacement for the remaining matches at Lord’s and The Oval. This leaves South Africa slightly stretched on batting depth, but team management has indicated faith in the original squad to close out the series.
There is some relief for the team with news that Matthew Breetzke, who had his own hamstring concerns, is now fit and available for selection in the next fixture. The Proteas, buoyed by their opening win, will look to maintain momentum despite the loss of De Zorzi.
