South Africa’s women’s hockey team will head to Egypt in October with their sights set on an eighth consecutive African Cup of Nations title and qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The South African Hockey Association confirmed an 18-player squad for the continental tournament in Ismailia, where the winner secures Africa’s only berth at next year’s World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Head coach Inky Zondi has blended experience and fresh talent, retaining nine Olympians from the Paris 2024 campaign and adding three uncapped players, Ané Janse van Vuuren, Caylin Maree, and Jeanri Thomas. The selection rewards strong performances in local leagues and aims to inject new energy into a team already known for its competitive edge.
Midfield stalwart Quanita Bobbs, who has amassed 185 international caps, will provide leadership alongside established stars such as Onthatile Zulu, Hannah Pearce, and goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder. The squad’s depth and pedigree make them clear favourites to extend a dominant run that has seen South Africa lift the Cup seven times in succession.
Zondi expressed full confidence in the group’s ability to deliver results. South Africa kicks off its title defence on 11 October, with the final scheduled for 18 October. Tournament organisers are set to announce the full fixture list soon, but anticipation is already building for a campaign that could see the team write another chapter in their proud history.
