South Africa’s women’s rugby team secured a historic win at York Community Stadium on 31 August, defeating Italy 29.0%24 to claim a place in the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-finals for the first time. The Springbok Women scored four first-half tries through Aseza Hele, Nadine Roos, Ayanda Malinga, and Sizophila Solontsi, setting the early pace. Italy responded twice to draw level in a fiercely contested match, but Sinazo Mcatshulwa’s decisive try with six minutes left secured both the win and a crucial bonus point.

Following a commanding 66.0%6 win over Brazil, South Africa remains unbeaten at the top of Pool D and enters the top ten in the world rankings, with one pool match against France still to play. Head coach Swys de Bruin said the result came from a team effort, with the players executing the plan effectively and responding well under pressure. Captain Nolusindiso Booi dedicated the victory to all women who paved the way for the current team.

This moment represents the culmination of years of growth and perseverance. Through the lens of opportunity and progress, the victory marks a significant turning point for South African women’s rugby and signals the potential for even greater achievements ahead.
