The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) said yesterday that 20 murders involving political representatives, party members and supporters had been recorded “during the election period”, with seven arrests. It did not say when that period begins.

“We remain particularly concerned about incidents involving the loss of life during the election period. Twenty murders with seven arrests have been recorded in incidents involving political representatives, party members and supporters,” NATJOINTS chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said, according to the government news agency SAnews.

Gauteng recorded the highest number of these murders, at seven, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with six, the Western Cape with three, the Eastern Cape with two, and one each in the Free State and North West, SAnews reported.

It said 139 dockets relating to election-related crime had been registered nationally since the start of the election processes, including 21 during the first voter registration weekend in June and 13 during the second in August. It said 48 suspects were arrested.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola said on Friday that police had identified 331 high-risk voting stations across the country.

KwaZulu-Natal has “the highest number of high-risk voting stations, with 165 identified across the province”, 124 of them in the eThekwini District, Masemola said at a briefing in Durban.

Gauteng has 119 high-risk voting stations; the Western Cape 33, all in the City of Cape Town; Mpumalanga 11; and the Eastern Cape three, Masemola said. The North West, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Free State have no stations classified as high-risk, only medium- and low-risk ones, he added.

“We are, however, concerned about the killings and attacks targeting political party supporters, party members and ward candidates. These acts of violence have no place in our democracy,” Masemola said.

“No political ambition or disagreement justifies the taking of a life, the intimidation of a candidate or the assault of a political opponent,” he said.
