The anti-immigrant party is polling at same level as the governing party, but it would be unlikely to win an election.

One Nation, the Australian right-wing populist party, is now neck-and-neck in polling with the governing Labor Party.

According to polling conducted by Roy Morgan, Australia’s biggest market research company, both One Nation and the Labor Party had the support of 27% of those polled.

The centre-right Liberal-National Coalition had the support of 20% of those polled.

The Greens had the support of 14% of those polled, while 13% said they would support other parties or independents.

Australia uses preferential voting in elections for Parliament. Voters rank candidates in order of preference, and if no candidate wins more than 50% of first-choice votes, the lowest-ranked candidates are eliminated and their votes redistributed until someone passes 50%.

Roy Morgan modelled results from how people said they would vote in terms of their preferences, and Labor would emerge victorious with about 55% of the vote.

The next election is due to be held in 2028.

The rise of One Nation continues a pattern that is becoming widespread across much of the West, with populist right-wing parties winning the support of large numbers of people, often because of concerns over widespread migration and economic stagnation.

South Africa has also not been immune, with the emergence of populist anti-immigrant parties, such as the Patriotic Alliance and ActionSA. In addition, South Africa has seen a number of anti-foreigner marches and protests in recent weeks, with The Common Sense warning that this could be a spark to possible unrest this winter in the country.
