Bekkersdal Tavern Massacre Linked to Zama Zama Turf War, Residents Say

Residents in Bekkersdal say the tavern massacre may have been triggered by a turf war among zama zamas fighting over access to abandoned mines, as fear spreads through the West Rand community. Police have not confirmed a motive.

Nine people were killed and 10 injured when gunmen opened fire at a tavern in the early hours of December 21. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
