A 45-year-old man travelling to Hong Kong was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday after police found approximately two kilogrammes of suspected cocaine in his luggage.

Police said officers intercepted the passenger following intelligence received about suspected drug trafficking. A search of his luggage uncovered the drugs, with an estimated street value exceeding R800 000. He is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this week on drug-related charges.

The arrest follows the interception of a 54-year-old South African man at the same airport last week. That passenger was also bound for Hong Kong and allegedly had cocaine concealed in his luggage.

Police said the arrests formed part of continuing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks through intelligence-led enforcement at South Africa’s ports of entry.
