After days of deliberate obfuscation, denials, and lies Roedean School has admitted guilt in the King David antisemitism scandal.
In a letter to Rabbi Seeff of King David, Roedean admitted that, "while there were communication challenges which compounded this incident, these were not the cause of the cancellation of the match as Roedean originally understood and communicated".
The Common Sense was the first newspaper to report the existence of an audio recording establishing that the elite girls school had lied and obfuscated in its public commentary after the scandal broke.
Insiders say it was that recording that ultimately checkmated the school into being forced to admit the truth.
The Common Sense also reported on the long history of antisemitism at elite western institutions.
The school also said that, "we acknowledge that our actions which led to the cancellation of the match with King David were deeply hurtful to the Jewish community and sincerely apologise. We recognise the impact this situation has had on both our communities and are committed to reflecting on the internal circumstances that led to this outcome".
Roedean has also confirmed that the head mistress of the school would exit via a resignation although questions remain about whether she was scapegoated by other senior staff at the school who had enabled a climate of hate and division. The head had only served at the school for six months and several insiders have told The Common Sense that the climate was already "toxic" and "captured" before she took the job.
A letter seen by The Common Sense and sent to the Jewish community by the South African Board of Jewish Education following Roedean's apology said, "We have been resolute in ensuring that our children understand that we will not tolerate antisemitism or discrimination in any form and we believe this has been achieved."
