The death toll from the mass shooting at a tavern in Wedela, Carletonville, has risen to 18 after another victim died in hospital, Gauteng police confirmed today.

Five injured victims remain critically wounded, while the others are stable. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said only four of those killed had been identified, comprising two South Africans and two Lesotho nationals.

The attack took place on Saturday night. Police said eight gunmen opened fire on patrons outside the tavern before entering the building and continuing the shooting. Seventeen people died at the scene.

The attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They allegedly searched some patrons and stole cellphones before escaping in two unidentified vehicles. Two vehicles were also set alight during the attack.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni has established a dedicated investigation team comprising murder and robbery detectives, Crime Intelligence officers, and crime scene specialists.

Police are now investigating 18 counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, two counts of malicious damage to property, and armed robbery. Operation Prosper, involving the South African National Defence Force and specialised police units, has also been brought in to intensify operations around Wedela.

No arrests have been made.
