International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola told the United Nations (UN) General Assembly last week that Israel’s conduct constituted genocide and urged the international community to act.

“The State of Israel’s continued violations of international and humanitarian law constitute genocide,” he said. Lamola reaffirmed South Africa’s support for a two-state solution in accordance with UN resolutions.

South Africa instituted proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice in December 2023, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention. Israel rejects the allegations, arguing that its military campaign targets Hamas and other armed groups rather than Palestinian civilians.

Lamola also called for sanctions against Zimbabwe to be lifted and for an end to the American embargo on Cuba. He described Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism as unfounded and warned that unilateral economic measures harmed third countries.

The minister urged countries to protect international justice institutions from sanctions and intimidation. He also pressed for permanent African seats on the UN Security Council, including the full powers attached to permanent membership.

On economic policy, Lamola backed the establishment of an International Panel on Inequality alongside Brazil, Norway, and Spain. He argued that failure to address inequality and insecurity weakened public confidence in democracy and international cooperation.
