The Common Sense has been told that John Steenhuisen may resign as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) this week and as early as tomorrow.
This follows his catastrophic mishandling of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in the country which has blunted his party’s reputation for effective governance and run contrary to its established policy and campaign positions.
Steenhuisen’s possible resignation comes just after a week after he told the Talking Sense podcast of The Common Sense that he would stay and fight for his position. DA party insiders told The Common Sense that Steenhuisen had months back accepted and reneged on an agreement to surrender the party leadership while keeping his position in the Cabinet and that he might therefore renege on the latest agreement.
The Common Sense understands that should Steenhuisen resign as party leader the DA has agreed that he can stay on as a cabinet minister.
Tomorrow in The Common Sense read how it came to this for Steenhuisen, what his resignation might mean for the Government of National Unity, what the most recent polling said about his popularity, and how Geordin Hill-Lewis, his most likely successor, could lead the party.
