South Africans appear to have developed a clear measure of confidence in the country’s Government of National Unity (GNU), according to polling conducted in late 2025 by the Social Research Foundation.
The survey asked respondents whether the GNU, comprising parties including the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), is working very well, quite well, quite poorly, or very poorly. When the responses are grouped, 49% of respondents say the GNU is working well, combining 10% who say very well and 39% who say quite well. By contrast, 34% believe it is working poorly, made up of 17% who say quite poorly and 17% who say very poorly.
Among ANC voters, 50% say the GNU is working well, with 16% saying very well and 34% saying quite well. Opposition among ANC voters totals 23%, made up of 9% who say it is working quite poorly and 14% who say very poorly.
Among DA voters, 56% say the GNU is working well, with 5% saying very well and 51% saying quite well. Opposition among DA voters totals 33%, made up of 22% who say it is working quite poorly and 11% very poorly.
