David Miller, the veteran South African white-ball batter, has not been included in the latest contract list released by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

Miller was the most notable omission from the list, although a number of other players, such as Rassie van der Dussen, also did not have their contracts renewed.

CSA announced the new list of contracts yesterday, with the notable new inclusions being young batters Dewald Brevis and Matthew Breetzke and seam bowler Ottneil Baartman.

Miller, who has played more than 300 white-ball matches for South Africa, was on a “hybrid” contract, which gave him more flexibility, allowing him to pick which series he wanted to play in, and allowing him to play in lucrative T20 leagues around the world. For example, he missed last year’s away series against Australia, when he chose to play in the Hundred in England. The 36-year-old’s omission could mean that his international retirement could be imminent.

Van der Dussen, who is slightly older than Miller, was also on a hybrid contract, which was not renewed.

Fast bowlers Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, and Lizaad Williams, who have all spent time on the sidelines through injury, were also dropped from the contract list. However, Coetzee and Burger were included in a new contract category – Players of National Interest (PONIs) – which contracts players on the fringes of national selection, particularly young up-and-coming players.

Notable names on the PONIs list include the Hermann brothers (Jordan and Rubin) and explosive batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius. Also included are a number of players who made their debut in the Proteas’ victorious T20 away series against New Zealand, including Nqobani Mokoena, who had a breakout SA20 season with the Paarl Royals this year, all-rounder Dian Forrester, and wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen.

South Africa has a busy season ahead with Test tours by Australia, Bangladesh, and England. In addition, the next Cricket World Cup is due to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in late 2027 so the upcoming season will be important preparation for that tournament.

CSA Contract List : Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Simon Harmer (hybrid contract).

PONIs Contract List: Marques Ackerman, Nandre Burger, Okuhle Cele, Gerald Coetzee, Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester, Bjorn Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Jordan Hermann, Rubin Hermann, Nqobani Mokoena, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Nqaba Peter, Sinethemba Qeshile, Lesego Senokwane, Lutho Sipamla, Jason Smith, Prenelan Subrayen, Tiaan van Vuuren, Codi Yusuf
