South African-born Natascha Viljoen will become the first woman to lead Newmont, the world’s largest gold miner valued at $99 billion (R1.72 trillion). She will start the role in January 2026.
Born in Klerksdorp in 1970, Viljoen, currently Newmont’s Chief Operating Officer, has over 30 years of experience witha number of global mining giants including BHP, AngloGold, and Lonmin.She also previously served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Anglo American Platinum.
Outgoing CEO Tom Palmer described her selection as the start of: “a new era”.
In a statement, Viljoen said: “I want to express my gratitude to Tom for his mentorship and support, and to the Board for entrusting me with the responsibility to lead Newmont into its next phase of growth.”
