The White House has launched a major new science programme, the Genesis Mission.

United States (US) President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week creating the initiative, which an official fact sheet calls: “a new national effort to use artificial intelligence (AI) to transform how scientific research is conducted and accelerate the speed of scientific discovery.”

Announcing the move, the White House said the mission will allow America to use AI to accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, energy, materials science, and space exploration. The Genesis Mission charges the Secretary of Energy with leveraging the government’s own national laboratories to: “unite America’s brightest minds, most powerful computers, and vast scientific data into one cooperative system for research.”

Michael Kratsios, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, said: “President Trump is taking a revolutionary approach to scientific research, harnessing the power of AI to propel America into the Golden Age of Innovation. The Genesis Mission connects world-class scientific data with the most advanced American AI to unlock breakthroughs in medicine, energy, materials science, and beyond.” His remarks underline how the Trump administration is framing the plan as a turning point in the race to use AI for strategic advantage.

The Department of Energy has been placed at the centre of the project because it already oversees some of the world’s fastest supercomputers and seventeen national laboratories. “Throughout history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo mission, our nation’s brightest minds and industries have answered the call when their nation needed them,” said US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “Today, the United States is calling on them once again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our National Laboratories, supercomputers, and data resources to ensure that America is the global leader in artificial intelligence and to usher in a new golden era of American discovery.”

Modern science generates vast amounts of data from telescopes, particle accelerators, gene sequencers, and climate models that no human team can fully sift through. The Genesis Mission aims to build a common AI platform where those datasets are combined, analysed, and used to design experiments in an automated loop, so that work that once took years can in theory be done in months or weeks.

The scale of the initiative signals that Washington now sees AI not only as a commercial or military tool but as a cornerstone of scientific strategy, with potential effects ranging from faster drug discovery to more efficient power grids and safer materials in aircraft and electronics. If the mission succeeds, American laboratories may become far more effective at turning data into solutions that affect everything from public health to energy reliability.
