New York City has elected Zohran Mamdani, 34, as its first Muslim mayor, and its youngest in more than a century, marking a major victory for the progressive left.

Running on both the Democratic and Working Families Party tickets, Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, campaigned on a platform of affordability, promising rent freezes, free buses, universal childcare, and a higher minimum wage.

“This is the start of a new era,” Mamdani said at his first press conference, vowing to: “stand up for New York” against President Donald Trump.

Trump framed the election as a battle of ideologies. “Americans have a choice between communism and common sense,” he told supporters after the results. “They put America last, we put America first.”

Mamdani’s campaign drew strong backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, whose New York chapter provided volunteers and fundraising support. His win cements the movement’s growing influence and signals a leftward shift in urban politics.
