Some hotels claim to welcome pets. A few actually do it well. The difference shows the moment you check in with a leash in one hand and a bag of kibble in the other. South Africa’s handful of true pet-friendly stays balance comfort, courtesy, and clear ground rules that keep both guests and staff happy.

In Cape Town, the Twelve Apostles Hotel sets the tone with garden-level rooms for small dogs, beds and bowls on request, and a leash rule that keeps the grounds calm. It asks for a refundable deposit and insists pets are never left alone. The nearby Radisson RED at the V and A Waterfront is another easy match for city weekends. Two small pets are allowed per room for a modest fee, and while dogs cannot enter the indoor mall spaces, the promenade outside offers long walks with sea air and coffee stops.

Upcountry, Four Seasons The Westcliff in Johannesburg welcomes dogs under about 19 kilograms and provides soft beds and water bowls as part of the stay. The property’s leafy slopes lead straight to Zoo Lake, a local favourite for laps and frisbee breaks.

Beyond the hotel gates, city bylaws still shape your trip. Cape Town’s official beach zoning maps mark where dogs can run free and where they must be on-leash, while Hermanus lets leashed dogs enjoy the cliff path. Johannesburg’s Botanical Garden allows pets on leads, making it a rare green refuge for urban walkers.

The fine print matters. Some reserves like Modderfontein ban pets to protect wildlife, and others follow suit. Travel light, carry poop bags, and respect the rules. A bit of discipline keeps the welcome open for every traveller with a wagging tail.
