Legal experts have criticised NDPP Shamila Batohi after she left the Nkabinde inquiry while under cross examination, without seeking permission, saying it raised serious accountability concerns for the NPA. She later returned after the panel challenged her decision, citing a need for legal advice.

The inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Bess Nkabinde, is probing whether suspended South Gauteng DPP Andrew Chauke is fit to hold office. Parliament’s justice committee chair also condemned Batohi’s conduct, warning that even senior justice officials must remain answerable to due process.
