A South African survivor says he was trafficked to Myanmar and held in scam compounds near the Thai border, where he was beaten, starved and forced to run online fraud.

DIRCO has warned that fake job adverts lure citizens into guarded compounds and coercion. It said 23 South Africans were rescued and repatriated from Myanmar in March 2025.
