Scientists say they have identified the oldest reliably dated rock art yet found, a hand stencil on a cave wall in Indonesia dated to at least 67 800 years ago using uranium series dating of calcite deposits over the pigment.

The discovery, reported in Nature, adds to evidence that Ice Age communities in Indonesia were producing symbolic art far earlier than previously confirmed, reshaping timelines for early human creativity in the region.
