A South African National Defence Force soldier died after a patrol vehicle was swept away while trying to cross a flooded river near the Macadamia military base outside Komatipoort on Christmas Day during Operation Corona border control duties.

The SANDF said two members were caught by the strong current. One body was recovered and search teams continued on Saturday for the missing soldier, with air and dive support deployed.
