Germany has unveiled a military service plan that avoids full conscription but prepares the country to expand its armed forces quickly. From 2026 all 18-year-old men will be registered and assessed for service, while women may volunteer. The system aims to raise numbers through incentives rather than compulsory drafts.
Berlin wants to grow the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces from roughly 180 000 to 260 000 soldiers in response to rising security concerns. Officials say a backup option for limited compulsory service remains possible if voluntary recruitment falls short, though it would still need parliamentary approval.
