The Department of Basic Education has proposed ending the inland coastal split in favour of a single national school calendar. Draft amendments gazetted this month would see all provinces follow identical term dates, with schools opening in the third week of January and holiday periods standardised across the country.

The plan removes staggered starts and regional clusters, aiming for simpler planning for exams, staffing, and families.
