Louvre to Install New Cameras After Security Failures

The Louvre will install around 100 new external security cameras by the end of 2026 after an investigation found gaps that enabled last year’s jewel heist. Auditors discovered major blind spots on walls and balconies, and even a key camera in the Apollo Gallery facing the wrong direction when thieves struck.

French authorities will add an onsite police station, anti-intrusion systems, and new perimeter barriers as part of more than 20 emergency measures. The upgrade is part of a broader modernisation plan aimed at tightening surveillance while managing the challenges of an ageing building and rising visitor numbers.
